In 2022, I set out on a bicycle journey across the island of Cyprus, starting on the northern coast after arriving by ferry from Taşucu and travelling right around the island to Larnaca.
The route took me through a remarkable variety of landscapes and towns: from the historic harbor and castle of Kyrenia (Girne), through Kormakitis and Morphou (Güzelyurt), past Limnitis (Yeşilırmak) and across the border towards Polis on the northwest coast. From there, the path continued south through Paphos, onward through Pissouri, along the coastal roads to Limassol, and finally reaching Larnaca.
From there, the landscape gradually changed as I transitioned from the rugged northern coastline and agricultural plains into the dramatic cliffs, coastal road stretches, and sun-baked Mediterranean towns of the south. The journey provided a fascinating contrast between quiet rural villages, ancient ruins, bustling port cities, and serene coastal views.
Some of the highlights included exploring the historic harbor and fortress of Kyrenia, riding along the pristine coastal stretches of Kormakitis and Morphou, navigating the scenic western coast near Polis and Paphos, taking in the dramatic cliffside roads near Pissouri, and concluding the trip along the palm-lined promenades of Limassol and Larnaca.
Unlike a conventional holiday, travelling by bicycle gives a very different perspective. Distances are covered slowly, the landscape changes gradually, and towns and villages become part of the experience rather than simply places to pass through.
This photo slideshow is based on my travel diary from the 2022 journey and follows the route from Kyrenia to Larnaca.
