The Pacific Northwest is sitting above one of the most dangerous fault systems in North America — the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Scientists know this fault has produced massive magnitude-9 earthquakes before. On January 26, 1700, a devastating Cascadia megathrust earthquake sent a tsunami across the Pacific to Japan. More than 300 years later, pressure continues building beneath the Pacific Northwest, while scientists closely monitor the fault for signs of future activity. A future magnitude-9 Cascadia earthquake could produce minutes of violent shaking, sudden coastal land subsidence, massive landslides, widespread infrastructure damage, liquefaction, and a devastating tsunami capable of reaching deep into coastal communities. But there may be an even more disturbing possibility. Research discussed in this video suggests the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the San Andreas Fault may have experienced closely timed ruptures in the past — raising questions about whether a future Cascadia megaquake could trigger or coincide with major seismic activity elsewhere along the U.S. West Coast. This video explores the evidence scientists are using to understand America's next potential megaquake — from ancient Indigenous earthquake stories and the Neskowin Ghost Forest to tree-ring evidence, Japanese tsunami records, deep-sea sediment cores, seismic imaging, and modern Cascadia monitoring technology. We also examine the latest earthquake probability estimates, what a magnitude-9 Cascadia rupture could mean for Seattle, Portland, Vancouver and coastal communities, how quickly a tsunami could arrive, and why scientists are developing vertical tsunami evacuation towers and new emergency-preparedness strategies. The biggest question remains unanswered: When will Cascadia rupture again? Scientists cannot predict the exact date or time of the next megaquake. But the geological record tells us that these earthquakes have happened before — and the fault remains an active, closely monitored threat. Watch until the end to understand what scientists know about the Cascadia Subduction Zone, what they still don't know, and why preparedness could make the difference when the next major earthquake eventually strikes. ⚠️ This video is presented for educational and informational purposes. Earthquakes cannot currently be predicted to an exact date or time. Risk estimates and scientific findings can change as new research becomes available. #Cascadia #CascadiaSubductionZone #Megaquake #Earthquake
