He called 911 himself and said his best friend had stumbled in through the back door, already hurt.
There was no blood at the back door, and the door was locked.
On the morning of September 14, 2023, Robert Neaves, 25, died from a single stab wound to the chest on the living-room floor of his best friend since middle school, Israel Cortez, in San Antonio. Cortez called 911 at 7:30 a.m. He never said "knife." He never said "stab."
At trial in September 2026, the jury heard the 911 call, the officers' body camera audio and the interview Cortez gave detectives that first morning, when he said someone else had been after Robert for a long time. A childhood friend testified that Cortez called him and said it was an accident. The lead detective testified that Cortez's mother told him her son had confessed to stabbing Robert during a fight. A camera on his street recorded a red car pulling in at 6:16 a.m., in what police said was his driveway, after he told detectives he hadn't left home since 11 p.m.
The jury found Israel Cortez not guilty of murder and guilty of manslaughter. Then he pleaded true to a prior felony conviction, and the range for manslaughter went from 2–20 years to 5–99 years or life. The same jury gave him 40 years.
This video follows the trial from the opening statements to the sentence, and ends with five lessons on intent, recklessness, self-defense and how one prior conviction changes the math.
