86.8 cubic meters every second: Guinness lists El Hammam as the world's largest water treatment plant. It cleans salty farm drainage so it can be pushed uphill into the desert.
The drainage carries about 2,000 mg of salt per liter, the edge of the FAO's severe-restriction class. Tertiary treatment removes solids but not dissolved salt, so the water is blended with normal irrigation water, then lifted by pumping stations such as Nabaa (22 m head).
By the numbers: built in 24 months with 27 million worker hours; rated for 7.5 million m³ a day; serving a 2.2-million-feddan target, slightly larger than Yellowstone.
The cost: about EGP 800 billion (roughly $15B), according to the presidency. About 800,000 feddans had been reclaimed by May 2026, and the water ministry reported the feeder route 79% complete in August 2026.

If you followed Libya's Great Man-Made River or California's State Water Project, which lifts water 1,926 feet, this is the same fight against gravity, with water that has already been used once.
Mega Engineering: how the world's hardest structures are built, tested and sometimes nearly lost, every number sourced.
