What does an ordinary working day really look like in Kandahar, Afghanistan
In this documentary, we spend a full day with Ustad Javid, a local welder and metal fabricator who owns a small workshop in Kandahar. From the moment he arrives by bicycle at 8 in the morning until he closes his workshop at around 6:30 in the evening, the camera quietly follows his day as it naturally unfolds.
There are no staged scenes and no interviews. Everything you see happened naturally during a normal working day.
Ustad Javid arrives at his workshop with his young son, opens the shop, prepares his tools and begins the day's work. Throughout the morning, we see him cutting, shaping and welding steel while his son spends the day nearby, playing around the workshop.
But this film is about more than the work itself.
It also captures the small details of everyday life in Kandahar. Burning espand before starting work, a traditional practice associated with protection from the evil eye. Sharing tea and conversation with neighbouring shopkeepers. Stopping work for the midday prayer at a nearby mosque. Bringing lunch from home and eating together around a dastarkhan. A simple meal of aubergine and tomatoes with doogh. Resting beside the cooler during the hottest part of the afternoon, before returning to work until evening.
These are ordinary moments, but together they offer a glimpse into a side of Afghanistan that is rarely seen by people outside the country.
At LuiLala, we want to document real life in Afghanistan as it is. The people, the streets, the work, the food, the traditions and the everyday moments that often go unseen.
