In this new 4K documentary vlog from LuiLala, we explore Qalacha (Qala Che), one of the historic neighbourhoods of Kandahar City, Afghanistan, with a history dating back approximately 320 years.
Known locally as Qalacha Mirza Mohammad Khan, this old neighbourhood has witnessed centuries of change. According to local accounts, the area was once covered with pomegranate orchards, gardens, and dense reed beds before gradually developing into the residential neighbourhood we see today.
Our 24 minute and 26 second journey begins at the foot of Kotal Baba Sahib and follows the main road connecting Qalacha and Chuni. Along the way, our reporter explores several well known alleys, historic houses, mosques, and residential streets, capturing the authentic atmosphere of everyday life in Kandahar.
📍 During this walking tour, we explore and pass through several notable locations:
• Hazrat Bilal Mosque Alley
• Sakhi Asadullah Mosque Alley
• Imam Reza Hussainiya Alley
• Aal e Rasool Mosque Alley
• Zabit Akram Alley
The video includes detailed walking tours inside Hazrat Bilal Mosque Alley, Sakhi Asadullah Mosque Alley, and Aal e Rasool Mosque Alley, giving viewers a closer look at the traditional houses, narrow streets, local architecture, and daily life of residents.
We also visit the entrances to Hazrat Bilal Mosque and Sakhi Asadullah Mosque, two notable religious landmarks in this historic neighbourhood.
🎤 Interviews with Local Residents and Descendants of Mirza Mohammad Khan
One of the highlights of this documentary is our conversation with Haji Hikmatullah and Haji Aminullah, two descendants of Mirza Mohammad Khan who are also paternal cousins.
They share valuable information about Qalacha's history, its geographical boundaries, the neighbourhood's past, and the changes it has experienced over generations.
We also interview Sayed Askar, a local community representative from Sakhi Asadullah Mosque Alley, who discusses the history of the area and the difficulties facing its residents.
💧 The Water Crisis in Qalacha
Despite its rich history, Qalacha faces a serious shortage of water. During our interviews, local residents explain how underground water sources and wells have been drying up, forcing families to struggle to meet their daily water needs.
Their personal experiences highlight one of the most significant challenges affecting this historic community today.
🏘️ From Old Gardens to Modern Kandahar
Through our walk and conversations with local residents, we discover how an area once known for its gardens, pomegranate orchards, and reed beds has gradually transformed into a populated neighbourhood while preserving traces of its history and cultural identity.
Our journey ends at Police District 13 (Hawza 13), the point where Qalacha and Chuni meet, marking the boundary between these two neighbouring areas of Kandahar.
Filmed in 4K Ultra HD, this documentary offers viewers a detailed look at the historic alleys, local architecture, traditional houses, mosques, and everyday life in one of Kandahar's oldest neighbourhoods.
At LuiLala, our mission is to explore Afghanistan's historic places, document the stories of local communities, preserve memories of the past, and share the country's culture and heritage with audiences around the world.
