The playback audio in this test is natively reproduced through the Canyon Sound Wave Juniper console. Handcrafted by Phil in his workshop in Kanab, Utah, each cabinet is hand-sanded to a glass-smooth 2500-grit finish for an incredibly organic, tactile surface.
Built with a physics-first architecture, the Juniper leverages an isolated dual-chamber internal enclosure to ensure true stereophonic separation and expansive imaging from a single cabinet. It features premium, highly optimized Markaudio Pluvia 7.2 HD full-range transducers, eliminating the phase anomalies and timing issues of traditional crossovers. The front baffle embeds an acoustically inert, hand-selected slab of native Arizona picture sandstone, acting as a massive energy sink (Constrained Layer Damping) that drops cabinet panel resonance to absolute zero. Low-end extension drops down to an F10 of 39.4 Hz via dual high-velocity 1-3/8" rear ports, delivering a highly musical, fatigue-free reference listening experience.
ABOUT THIS RECORDING
This video features the cataclysmic final movement (Chorus Mysticus) from Osmo Vänskä’s definitive recording of Gustav Mahler’s monumental Eighth Symphony. Serving as the historic grand finale to Vänskä’s 19-year tenure as Music Director, this landmark session captures the true acoustic limits of Minneapolis's Orchestra Hall using an expanded ensemble of roughly 400 musicians.
Originally mastered by the world-class sound engineers at BIS Records for high-resolution Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, this recording flawlessly balances immense physical sound pressure with an ethereal, space-like atmospheric clarity. The massive performance pairs the Minnesota Orchestra with a combined vocal powerhouse consisting of the Minnesota Chorale, the National Lutheran Choir, the Minnesota Boychoir, and the Angelica Cantanti Youth Choirs. They are joined by an elite vocal lineup including sopranos Carolyn Sampson and Jacquelyn Wagner, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, contralto Jess Dandy, tenor Barry Banks, baritone Julian Orlishausen, and bass Christian Immler.
