The Untold Story of the Ramnami Community

For a long time, we carried a quiet wish to understand and document the journey of the Ramnami community. Years ago, we first encountered them through a photographer’s work, and those images stayed with us. What began as curiosity slowly became study, reflection, and eventually a clear inner call that this story needed to be told. When we travelled to Chhattisgarh, we did not arrive with conclusions. We arrived with openness. In a village along the banks of the Mahanadi, we encountered a living tradition shaped by remembrance, resilience, and deep Vedantic understanding. What once arose in response to exclusion has, over generations, become a powerful way of being. A life where Ram is not approached through form, but lived through Naam, discipline, and awareness. Our time with the Ramnamis was filled with conversations that lingered long after they ended. There was clarity in how Ram was spoken of. There was steadiness in how devotion was lived. To witness a community rooted in Nāma, carrying this understanding across generations with dignity and simplicity, was deeply humbling for us.
