Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor is one of J.S. Bach's most famous organ works. It has been arranged for bands, orchestras and other large ensembles because it works so beautifully for so many different types of groups, and in this brass arrangement the ensemble imitates the sound of the organ. A passacaglia is like a theme and variations: a theme called the ground bass is stated and then repeats over and over, 20 times in this piece, with each repetition varied. The passacaglia leads straight into a fugue, where a short snippet of music is repeated with different voices starting at different times, a bit like singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" as a round. The fugue uses the first half of the passacaglia theme, accompanied by a bouncier, more dance-like figure in eighth notes, and the piece ends in a great climax. The Finest City Musicians Alliance (FCMA) seeks to unify their community through artistic performance, mentorship, and multi-disciplinary collaboration to create a more vibrant San Diego County. Finest City Brass (FCB) is a large symphonic brass choir comprised of 25-30 musicians specializing in music for brass and percussion. Directed by Avi Mehta, the ensemble performs approximately 3 concerts per year featuring both contemporary brass repertoire and large symphonic pieces adapted for smaller groups. FCB strives to foster community and build connections in the brass community through musical excellence, free concerts around San Diego, and mentorship opportunities for young brass and percussion students.
