USA: The Great Railroads of the American West | Scenic Rail Journey Ep 11

Travel far, see the world. In Episode 11 of TradingRight · The Scenic Rail Journey we come to the American West, riding the California Zephyr over the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, the Coast Starlight down the Pacific coast, and some century-old steam and cog railways. Twenty-three stops: from Denver, the Mile High City, through the Moffat Tunnel beneath the Continental Divide, along the Colorado River through Gore Canyon, reached only by rail and raft, Glenwood Canyon and Ruby Canyon at sunset, across the deserts of the Great Basin, by Reno and Truckee over Donner Pass, built by Chinese workers, to Sacramento, where the first transcontinental railroad began, and San Francisco Bay; then on the Coast Starlight from Seattle by Portland, Odell Lake in the Cascades, Mount Shasta, the horseshoe curve of the Cuesta Grade, the Gaviota coast seen only from the train and Santa Barbara, to Los Angeles Union Station; then from Williams on Route 66 to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, by narrow-gauge steam from Durango along the High Line to Silverton, over the mountains on the Cumbres and Toltec, and finally by cog railway to the summit of Pikes Peak at 4,302 metres. Four chapters explore the history of the railroads of the West, their engineering, life on board and how to ride, and the food along the line.
