🔴 LIVE | Carving a Monster Pictorial Seal (肖形印) on Natural Changhua Stone | Henry Li

Join artist and seal carver Henry Li for a live demonstration of traditional Chinese seal carving (篆刻), featuring a bold, prehistoric-looking monster carved into a naturally shaped Changhua stone (昌化石). Unlike traditional Chinese name seals featuring calligraphic characters, this project is a pictorial seal (肖形印, Xiàoxíng Yìn), where an image becomes the seal's central design. The monster's dramatic silhouette—with its jagged back, powerful jaws, short legs, and sweeping tail—creates a striking contrast between solid red and untouched white space. The stone's organic oval shape and beautiful natural colors add another dimension to the project. Rather than forcing the design into a conventional square, Henry adapts the composition to the stone's natural contours. In this live carving session, you'll see: How a monster illustration is translated into a Chinese pictorial seal design. How to adapt a design to an irregular, naturally shaped stone. The principles of positive and negative space in seal carving. Traditional hand-carving techniques using a seal-carving knife. How the finished seal produces a dramatic red-and-white impression. The finished design uses the Yin (白文) carving style, with the monster appearing white against a solid red background. Discover how an imaginative contemporary creature can come to life through the centuries-old Chinese art of seal carving.
