In 1953, scientists started an argument that still hasn't ended: maybe humans didn't start farming for bread. Maybe they started farming for beer. It sounded like a joke, until the evidence started turning up. In a cave in Israel, archaeologists found stone mortars with traces of a grain brew made by hunter-gatherers around 13,000 years ago, thousands of years before anyone planted a field. At Göbekli Tepe, one of the oldest monuments on Earth, giant stone troughs hold residues that some researchers think came from brewing on a huge scale. In this video: the 10-million-year-old gene mutation that made our ape ancestors about 40 times better at breaking down alcohol, and the rotting fruit that probably gave us our first taste... why brewing uses so much grain that it may have pushed foragers to start planting it... how the first big gatherings in human history may have been held together by a shared drink... and the twist: the oldest bread ever found is even older, which changes what the real story is. Farming may not have started with hunger. It may have started with a feast. 💬 Bread or beer: which do you think came first?
