Driving a Truck on Dangerous Mountain Passes: Hauling Tons of Corn for Hmong Farmers

Stepping up for my sick uncle, I took over his delivery truck for a demanding run high into the remote northern mountains. The journey began behind the wheel, navigating steep cliffs, narrow dirt tracks, and treacherous winding passes to reach an isolated Hmong village. There, the local merchants and farmers were ready for harvest day. For hours, we hauled backbreaking 100-pound sacks of corn onto the scale, noting down each batch while surrounded by the pure joy and relief of hard-working farmers seeing their year's labor turn into earnings. Fully loaded across two collection points, I faced the white-knuckle drive back down the mountain pass before nightfall. We finally arrived at the massive commercial corn drying facility—a sea of golden corn stretching as far as the eye could see. After unloading the truck late into the evening, the merchant rewarded my hard work with a generous bonus on top of my wages. Politely declining dinner to make the long walk back home through the dark, I headed back to my hillside shelter exhausted, but with an honest day's pay.
