How does procedural generation actually work — and why is randomness alone not enough? Let’s look at the rules, algorithms, and game-design decisions behind procedural levels, worlds, encounters, and systems. We’ll also answer some common questions: How difficult is procedural generation? How is procedural generation done? What algorithms are used in procedural generation? Is procedural generation considered AI? Is procedural generation the same as generative AI? We look at techniques such as: Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) Random Walk Cellular Automata Perlin and Simplex Noise Wave Function Collapse Graph-based generation Constraint systems Weighted randomness Procedural validation But the most important part isn’t the algorithm. A generator can create thousands of different levels and still produce a terrible game. Good procedural generation comes from deciding: What must always happen? What can change? What should be rare? What should never happen? My favorite way to think about it is: Protect what matters. Randomize what doesn’t. Because procedural generation doesn’t replace the designer. It changes what the designer is designing. Instead of building one dungeon, you’re designing the rules that define what every possible dungeon is allowed to become.
