The BYD Yangwang U8 is a 1,200 HP Chinese luxury SUV that can float on water. Not as a boat. As an emergency system that keeps a nearly 3.5-ton SUV afloat for up to 30 minutes, under controlled conditions, at about walking speed.
That is the feature everyone films. This video is the engineering behind it.
How it actually works:
Emergency flotation: the range extender shuts off, the cabin seals, and four motors push the SUV through water
Why it is not a boat, and why you should never drive it into floodwater on purpose
360-degree tank turn from four independently controlled motors
0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, from an extended-range electric powertrain
BYD's e4 platform and DiSus-P hydraulic suspension
A flagship interior built to sit next to the Mercedes G-Class and Range Rover
