In October 2026, Altai, a five-year-old Siberian tiger, killed a man inside his enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Most tigers will never eat you. So why did this one attack?
The answer starts in the wild, where the man-eating tigers almost always have a reason. A Bengal tigress called Avni in central India, who simply ran out of room. The Sundarbans tigers, in the one forest where people are the easiest prey around. And the Champawat tiger, the deadliest man-eater on record, blamed for four hundred and thirty-six deaths before Jim Corbett finally tracked her down.
By the end, you’ll know why tigers attack humans, whether tigers are really as dangerous as they look, what really happened inside the enclosure, and why a big cat that weighs fifty times more than your house cat still hunts exactly like it.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of William Chapman.
