Dunskey Castle Portpatrick

Dunskey Castle is a ruined 16th-century L-plan tower house perched on a dramatic clifftop overlooking the Irish Sea, located about 0.5 miles south of the village of Portpatrick in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland.HistoryEarly Fortification: Built on the site of an earlier 12th-to-14th-century stronghold that was famously burned down in 1489 following a clan feud.Construction: The current stone structure was started around 1510 by the Adairs of Kinhilt, with additional wings added in the 1620s. Abandonment: The castle fell into disuse and was completely derelict and roofless by the early 1700s, with stones later scavenged for nearby buildings. Design: Built with thick stone walls on a sharp rocky promontory, protected on the landward side by a rock-cut defensive ditch. It is recognized as a scheduled monument of national importance.
