Miles off the coast of Kent, rusty steel boxes stand on concrete legs in the open sea. They have been there for more than 80 years. Why would anyone build giant towers in the middle of the sea?
In Case #003, we open the file on the Maunsell Sea Forts — a WWII answer to one very specific problem: German aircraft mining the shipping lanes into London. We follow the engineer who designed them, how they were built on land and sunk into place, what they actually achieved, why most were removed, how pirate radio DJs moved in during the 1960s — and why some of them are still standing today.

🔎 KEY FACTS
4 Navy forts (1942) and 6 Army forts (1943): 3 in the Thames Estuary, 3 in Liverpool Bay
Designed by civil engineer Guy Maunsell (1884–1961)
Combat figures (22 aircraft, ~30 V-1 flying bombs) come mainly from one book and are hard to verify
Red Sands was assessed by English Heritage in 2006 as nationally important — the most complete fort of its kind
Myth check: the forts were NOT "abandoned overnight" — they were retired step by step
