The Mughal Empire: How Conquest Became a System — and How It Came Apart

The Mughal Empire began in 1526, when Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat and established a new dynasty in northern India. But conquest alone did not create an empire that could survive for centuries. This documentary traces the complete history of the Mughal Empire — from Babur and Humayun, through Akbar’s transformation of conquest into a functioning imperial system, to the wealth and cultural power of Jahangir and Shah Jahan, and the enormous expansion of Aurangzeb. It examines how the Mughals governed a vast and diverse territory through systems such as mansabdari, jagirs, taxation, military service, and political alliances. It also explores the pressures that developed within that system: prolonged Deccan warfare, competition for resources, regional power, administrative strain, and the growing independence of provincial rulers. The story then moves through the decline of central Mughal authority, the invasion of Nadir Shah, the rise of regional powers, and the growing influence of the British East India Company. Finally, it reaches 1857, when Bahadur Shah Zafar became the last symbolic center of Mughal authority and the dynasty was formally brought to an end. The Mughal Empire was not simply a story of conquest or sudden collapse.
