What if one free app could turn your handheld radio into a complete amateur radio station? HTCommander is a free, open-source ham radio app that connects to Benshi radios over Bluetooth and packs APRS messaging, Winlink email, a packet terminal, SSTV, satellite tracking, and channel programming into a single program. In this video I give you a high-level tour of what HTCommander can do so you can decide if it belongs in your ham radio toolkit.
HTCommander works with Benshi-based handhelds, mobiles, and base radios, including the BTech UV-Pro, BTech UV-50Pro, Vero VR-N75, Vero VR-N76, Vero VR-N7500, Vero VR-N7600, Radioddity GA-5WB, Radioddity DB50-B Mini, and Radtel RT-660. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and even in your web browser, so your radio goes wherever you go.
On the APRS side, you get two-way APRS messaging, a live APRS map powered by OpenStreetMap with position history, APRS-IS internet gateway support, weather requests, and even SMS messaging to real phones. For digital messaging, HTCommander can send and receive Winlink email with attachments right from the radio, and it includes a packet terminal for connecting to other stations and BBS systems. You can even run your own lightweight BBS that doubles as a Winlink gateway for stations that can reach you.
Beyond APRS and Winlink, HTCommander handles SSTV with automatic image detection, satellite tracking with pass predictions and Doppler correction, packet capture and decoding, torrent-style file sharing over 1200 baud so an entire net can receive a file at once, speech to text and text to speech, a Morse code keyer, and channel programming with RepeaterBook import. Android users can also follow APRS messages and change channels through Android Auto in the vehicle.
Don’t own a Benshi radio yet? HTCommander has built-in EchoLink and APRS-IS support, so you can run it entirely over the internet and add a radio later. The app has no accounts, no tracking, and no cloud servers, and it is released under the Apache 2.0 open-source license.
Whether you are into EmComm, ARES, APRS, digital modes, or just want to get more out of your Bluetooth handheld, HTCommander is worth a look. Let me know in the comments which feature you want me to dive into next.
