There are four people in this room. You can see only two of them at first. Look inside the mirror in Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, and two additional figures appear in the doorway. Above them, the artist has written: “Jan van Eyck was here.” What was he there to witness? This art-history investigation follows the clues behind one of the most debated paintings of the Northern Renaissance. We examine the reflected visitors, the joined hands, the green dress, and the famous wedding interpretation—then explore the documentary evidence that challenged the traditional identification of the couple. Infrared examination adds another twist: the scene developed through changes and additions during the painting process. How much of this convincing room should we treat as a record of a real event? Discover how van Eyck used reflection, detail, and composition to make a painted encounter feel present, while leaving its precise meaning unresolved. When you first noticed the people in the mirror, did you think they were visitors, wedding witnesses, or the artist himself? Tell us in the comments.
