Case of Midsi Sanchez | True Crime Documentary An eight-year-old girl chained to the gearshift of a stranger's car for two days. On the morning of her birthday he stepped out and left his keys behind. She chose the smallest one. On Thursday 10 August 2000, 8-year-old Midsi Sanchez was walking home alone from Highland Elementary School in Vallejo, California, when a man leaning on a cane asked her to reach into his parked 1984 Oldsmobile Firenza for a roll of tape. He pushed her inside, put his hand over her mouth and drove off — past her own house, where her mother was planning her birthday party for that Saturday. The man was Curtis Dean Anderson, 39, a former Vallejo cab driver with a record going back to 1979: drugs, theft, weapons, a 1991 abduction of a woman he forced to drive him to Oregon. He had exposed himself to a child and locked a woman in a closet, but those incidents had been dealt with as parole violations, without convictions. He had never been convicted of a sex crime — and so, when 7-year-old Xiana Fairchild vanished from a Vallejo school-bus stop on 9 December 1999, his name was not on the sex-offender list police checked. For two days Midsi was kept on the floor of the car under a blanket, her ankle chained to the gearshift with a padlock, given wine and water and no food, and told she would be shot if she made a sound. On Saturday 12 August — her eighth birthday — Anderson parked in an industrial neighbourhood in Santa Clara outside his former employer, went inside, and left his keys. Midsi picked the smallest key, unlocked the padlock, climbed out of the window and dived into the cab of a Viking Freight truck driven by Carl Tafua, who wrote down the licence plate and radioed for help. Anderson was arrested at 7:15 p.m. that evening in San Jose. Midsi was home in Vallejo that night. In April 2001 she testified against him in Solano County Superior Court, holding a doll. On 1 May 2001 a jury convicted Anderson on all 11 counts; in July he was sentenced to 251 years. The day after the verdict he told a reporter he had killed Xiana Fairchild and ten other girls, then spent years taunting Xiana's family and the press: "I like to keep you all guessing." Xiana's skull had been found on Soda Springs Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains on 23 January 2001. Anderson was charged with her murder in May 2004 and, on 15 December 2005, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years to life. On 5 November 2007, dying of liver and kidney failure, he confessed to FBI agents at Corcoran State Prison that he had abducted and killed 7-year-old Amber Swartz-Garcia of Pinole in 1988, and described six more killings of young women between 1984 and 1999. He died on 11 December 2007, aged 46. None of those bodies has been found. Midsi Sanchez received the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's first Courage Award in 2001. Her teenage years were marked by addiction and a near-fatal crash in 2009; today she is a mother of three, a volunteer with the KlaasKids Foundation and the founder of her own foundation for missing and exploited children.
