Case of Scott Kologi | True Crime Documentary On Friday car rides to school, his aunt heard him tell his mother he wanted to talk to a shrink about his bad thoughts. She said no — she was afraid they would put him in a "looney bin." That testimony is in the trial record. Just before midnight on 31 December 2017, at 635 Wall Street in Long Branch, New Jersey, Linda Kologi went upstairs to bring her sixteen-year-old son Scott down for the countdown. He was waiting in the dark with his brother's Century Arms C39 V2 rifle, wearing sunglasses, a leather jacket and earplugs. In under two minutes he shot and killed his mother Linda, 44; his father Steven, 42; his sister Brittany, 18; and Mary Schulz, 70, his grandfather's longtime partner. He pointed the rifle at his grandfather Adrian, who pleaded with him, and lowered it. Then he put the gun down and waited for police. This is not the story the thumbnails tell. Nothing in the trial record or the appellate briefs supports the claims made online about his sister. What the record does contain: a boy who asked his mother, repeatedly, for a school therapist because of "bad thoughts" — and was told no, because she feared he would be institutionalised; a legally-owned rifle kept out of its safe in a shared closet because the safe was rusting it; a 7:32 p.m. phone search about body armour; and a recorded confession, made with his surviving brother sitting beside him as guardian, in which he said he knew it was "very wrong" but "felt like it wasn't me." The trial in February 2022 turned on one question: insanity. Defence psychologist Maureen Santina diagnosed schizophrenia and a psychotic episode, citing a voice in the shower that morning saying "welcome to the side of evil" — a detail first told to her, never to police. The State's rebuttal witness, Dr. Park Dietz, diagnosed autism spectrum disorder with obsessive traits, and testified that feeling detached is not the same as not knowing right from wrong. The jury convicted on all four counts of first-degree murder. On 30 June 2022 Judge Marc Lemieux sentenced him to 150 years — 127 years and six months before parole eligibility under the No Early Release Act. On 30 January 2025 the Appellate Division upheld the conviction and sentence in a 106-page opinion.
