Charcoal, a pregnant wild mare in Alberta’s grulla band, is close to giving birth—any day now. The next time I see her, she’ll have a foal beside her. Filmed in the foothills of Alberta, Canada, this band of free-roaming wild horses moves quietly through the snow. Led by the stallion Esadowa, the band stays close as Charcoal carries her foal in the final stages of pregnancy. What stood out most was Aniyah, her two-year-old colt. He remained close to her the entire time—standing near while she rested, and walking alongside her whenever the band began to move. A quiet kind of watchfulness, almost protective. Esadowa, the band stallion, was also attentive—keeping position and awareness as the group moved through the landscape. Moments like this are easy to miss. There’s no clear signal, no exact timing—but sometimes, you can feel when something is about to change. Wild horse foaling often happens out of sight. But here, in the stillness of winter, it felt close. By the time I return to this band, there will be new life among them. What is a Grulla horse? Grulla is a natural coat colour—kind of a smoky grey—with primitive markings you only see in wild horses.
