At our October meeting, Romsey Café Scientifique welcomed Professor Radan Slavik from the University of Southampton to explore the cutting-edge world of optoelectronics and next-generation fibre optics. In this talk, Professor Slavik discusses the limitations of traditional glass fibres and introduces a revolutionary shift in technology: hollow-core optical fibres that guide light through air rather than glass. This breakthrough delivers unprecedented data speeds, higher capacity, and lower latency—shaping the future of global communications, 5G/6G networks, and beyond. -- SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY -- Professor Radan Slavik is a Professor of Photonics at the world-renowned Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton. He completed his PhD in Quantum and Non-linear Optics at Charles University in Prague before moving into international research, eventually joining the ORC in 2009. As the head of the Coherent Optical Signals Group, his pioneering research focuses on advanced fibre-optic communications, all-optical signal processing, and the development of cutting-edge hollow-core optical fibres.
