The Panama Canal is one of the world’s most impressive engineering systems, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through a series of locks that lift and lower ships across the Isthmus of Panama.
Here’s how ships navigate through it:
Entering the Locks
Ships enter giant chambers called locks, such as the famous Miraflores Locks and Gatun Locks.
Water Lifts the Ship
Gravity-fed water fills the lock chambers, raising the ship about 85 feet above sea level to reach Gatun Lake.
Crossing the Interior
Ships travel across the lake and through narrow channels carved through jungle and mountains.
Descending on the Other Side
Another series of locks lowers the ship back to sea level before it exits into the other ocean.
Some quick facts:
The canal opened in 1914.
About 14,000 ships pass through annually.
The newer “Neo-Panamax” locks allow much larger vessels to transit.
