You probably call yourself your dog's mom or dad without a second thought. But the way your dog looks to you for help, checks whether you're watching, and squeezes in when you cuddle another dog has a lot in common with a toddler and a parent.
In this video we go through ten signs, in plain words, using research on how dogs bond with their people: turning to you when they're stuck, the "guilty look," showing you what they want, behaving better while you're watching, playing more freely with you nearby, jealousy (tested with a method first used on six-month-old babies), staying steadier at the vet with your hand on them, falling into step with you on a walk, confidence that seems to take after yours, and why a grown dog from a shelter can still choose you.
Each sign comes with something small you can do at home. If your dog ever stiffens, snaps or guards you from another pet, get help from a qualified behaviorist or trainer. Anything about your own dog's health is a job for your vet.
