15 Things Dog Never Forgive You For Doing To Them (Stop Immediately)

Call your dog in from the yard, and halfway across the grass they stop and look at you. Is that your dog refusing to forgive you? There's no good evidence that dogs hold grudges the way people do. What they do is learn what your voice, your hands and their own name are likely to bring, and some of those lessons stick long after you've forgotten teaching them. Here are fifteen everyday things that can teach your dog the wrong lesson, and how to make each one right: calling them over for the bath or a pill, using their name to scold, the telling-off that comes too late, the mess that's really distress, the crate as a time-out, the sit that falls apart somewhere new, asking and never paying, rewarding one dog and not the other, snatching things back, the fake throw, waking your sleeping older dog, hugs, pushing your shy dog on guests, the dog park at rush hour, and the one frightening moment that can leave a lasting fear. Along the way: what a team in Buenos Aires saw when dogs' rewards got smaller, why dogs in Vienna stopped giving a paw, how dogs in Japan stopped following a person who pointed them to nothing, and why even dogs don't always make up with each other. If your dog has a fear that's strong or isn't easing, or your older dog, always clean before, starts having accidents, talk to your vet.
