Fresh northerly winds of at least 14 knots and gorgeous flat seas welcomed us to our fifth Aegean Regatta 2019 training session with our fellow crew on the Giorgio Furuno OnDeck Sailing Team off the coast of Palio Faliro in southern Athens. Skipper George took advantage of the ideal conditions and had us perform back-to-back tacks and sail trimming, with several spinnaker gybes thrown in for good measure. It wasn't just an opportunity to improve our tacking and trimming skills. It turned out to be a bit of a cardio and upper body strengthening session combined. We got our heart rates up as we took turns to pull in the Genoa halyard line and grind the winch, while running back and forth across the cockpit. Our newer-to-sailing crew learned that the Genoa halyard needs to be wrapped around the winch at least three times, before locking into the self-tailer, to ensure that the line is loaded safely. As always, our two-hour early evening session concluded with a spectacular sunset over the Argosaronic Sea, which never fails to put huge smiles on our faces.
