Tottenham are struggling to score goals right now, but I think one of the biggest reasons has been overlooked: the full-backs.
In this video I break down why Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie could make a huge difference to Spurs’ attack when they return, and why the drop-off from them to the current options is bigger than people realise.
I look at Archie Gray’s excellent off-ball movement and his understanding of De Zerbi’s build-up, but also the small technical details that can slow Spurs down — from scanning and 360-degree awareness to the speed of his passing.
I then compare Gray with Porro and show how Porro’s technical quality, scanning and ability to play progressive passes quickly can create better conditions for Spurs’ attackers.
On the left, I explain the key difference between Udogie and Andy Robertson. Robertson has an excellent final ball, but Udogie’s explosive running allows Spurs to take advantage of the spaces created when the team shifts tempo and breaks through an opposition press.
Ultimately, this isn’t simply about having “better full-backs”. It’s about creating more time, space and favourable situations for Spurs’ attacking players.
Porro can help Spurs penetrate opposition structures and find dangerous players between the lines, while Udogie’s pace can maximise the space created by De Zerbi’s methodical build-up.
Could the return of Porro and Udogie be one of the keys to getting Spurs scoring again?
