Why can’t Spurs score? After watching back the Everton game in detail, I think there are some clear structural reasons why Tottenham are struggling not only to score goals, but to create clear-cut chances. In this video I break down the first half against Everton and look at why so many of Spurs’ problems start in the build-up rather than simply being an issue with the attackers. We look at the excellent work from Spurs’ centre-backs on the ball, but also why the midfield was too static, with Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur struggling to provide enough movement or progression through Everton’s block. The biggest issue for me is the number 10 position. Mateus Fernandes repeatedly dropped deeper to receive the ball, leaving Spurs without someone consistently occupying the space between Everton’s midfield and defence. I explain why this made Tottenham too easy to defend against and why Spurs desperately need someone who can operate between the lines and around the box. I also look at the left-sided relationship between Marmoush and Andy Robertson, the lack of creativity from the full-backs, and why Spurs aren’t attacking the space behind opposition defences enough. Finally, I explain what I think Spurs need to change — including playing Fernandes deeper and finding a genuine number 10 who can receive under pressure, pick the lock and give the attack more movement around the box. There are clearly personnel issues, but I think the bigger problem is structural. Spurs have enough quality to create chances — they just need to get the right players into the right areas.
