Join us for worship at ELCSA Tshwane City Parish on the 15th Sunday after Pentecost, as we continue our journey through the Season of Pentecost, a time in which the Holy Spirit gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the Church through the Gospel and the Sacraments. As God's people, we are called into a community shaped by Christ's grace, where truth is spoken in love, reconciliation is pursued, and forgiveness reflects the mercy we ourselves have received.
In the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 18:15–20, Jesus teaches His disciples how to respond when relationships within the community of faith are wounded by sin. He calls them first towards honest and personal reconciliation, then towards the wider community when necessary, always seeking restoration rather than condemnation. Christ also entrusts His Church with the authority to bind and loose, before assuring His disciples of His presence with the promise: "For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them."
Through the proclamation of the Word by Elijah Tjiane, we are invited to reflect on how we respond when relationships are fractured, to approach one another with humility and truth, and to rediscover the responsibility we share as a community gathered in the name and presence of Christ.
This Gospel reminds us that Christian reconciliation begins with the grace God has already extended to sinners through Jesus Christ. From a Lutheran perspective, the authority to bind and loose is rooted in Christ's gift of the keys, through which His Church proclaims both the seriousness of sin and the liberating promise of forgiveness. The goal is never punishment for its own sake, but repentance, forgiveness, and restoration.
