The Somerton Man was found dead against a seawall on an Adelaide beach in 1948 — no wallet, no hat, every clothing label removed, and a hidden scrap of paper that read "Tamám Shud." In this case file we open his pockets one exhibit at a time and ask what each object actually proves.
December 1, 1948. Somerton Park, South Australia. Witnesses saw a man lying in the same spot the evening before; by morning he was dead. The pathologist believed he was poisoned, but the government analyst found no common poison. In this episode the Archivist lays out the record: the unused rail ticket to Henley Beach, the bus ticket, the American-style comb, the seven Kensitas cigarettes in an Army Club packet, the suitcase left at Adelaide railway station with its orange waxed thread and the names "T. Keane," "Keane" and "Kean," the hidden fob pocket, the copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam with its torn last page, the five lines of unsolved code, and the telephone number of a woman known as "Jestyn" who lived about 400 meters from the beach.
Then we follow the file into the present: the 1949 and 1958 inquests, the "unknown man" headstone at West Terrace Cemetery, the 2021 exhumation, and the 2022 announcement by Professor Derek Abbott and genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick that DNA from hair in the plaster death cast points to Carl "Charles" Webb, an electrical engineer and instrument maker from Melbourne. As of October 29, 2026, South Australia Police have not formally confirmed the identification; in July 2026 they described the coronial investigation as "complex and ongoing."
We separate what is documented from what is legend (no, he did not take the train; no, "Tamam Shud" does not mean "the bitter end"), rank four theories about how he died, and give our own assessment. Theories are presented as theories.
If the name is confirmed but the code is never solved — is the case closed, or only half finished? Tell us in the comments.
