Colorism: The Politics of Skin Tone and How We Get Free #blackwoman

“That’s why I like your sister better than you, because she’s White and you’re Black.” This comment was made by a White girl at Dr. Webb’s daycare in the first grade. Although, Dr. Webb’s sister is a light-skinned Black woman she was mistaken for White. Dr. Webb’s major takeaway from the incident: Racism and colorism can occur simultaneously. This Sunday, I will be joined by three incredible Black Women to discuss colorism: Dr. Sarah L. Webb, Author, Speaker, and Coach Dr. Maya, Teacher and Virtual Assistant Colette Elizabeth, MA, Content Creator This conversation will center Dr. Webb’s book Colorism: The Politics of Skin Tone and How We Get Free. During this enlightening conversation, we will explore the effects of colorism in families, schools, policing, and more. We will address the historical roots of colorism, proximity to Whiteness, and its global impacts. The conversation will be extended by revealing how colorist preferences and biases can become embedded in systems that determine who is believed, protected, promoted, and represented. Because sometimes our earliest messages about skin tone, hair texture, and features come from the very people who love us. Various Black families unintentionally pass colorism from one generation to the next. In addition, as Black Women we often combat negative stereotypes (i.e., unprofessional or loud). However, what happens when these stereotypes are compounded, because you are a dark-skinned Black women? Colorism may cause you to be perceived as masculine, aggressive, and mean. Finally, we cannot talk about colorism without talking about power and safety. What happens when darker skin and more visible Black features influence perceptions of whom is dangerous, threatening, or deserving of force? We will discuss: ✔️ The global impacts of colorism in the United States, India, and Latin America ✔️When Black Women are mistreated for their skin tone, hair, and facial features ✔️Dealing with family members who may perpetuate colorism ✔️How colorism impacts the dating market for Black Women ✔️Colorism that has led to fatal police encounters for Black people ✔️Colorism in education and workplace settings ✔️Navigating a colorist society and world, while healing from its negative effects Special Guests: Dr. Sarah L.
