I have come to this island many times. Each time, it shows me a different face. In the rain-soaked forests of Yakushima, I paint the mist. The air. The humidity. The moment light passes through leaves — laid down with mineral pigments and brush, onto a single surface. In Nihonga — traditional Japanese painting — there is no going back. Before the first stroke, the painting must already be complete in the mind. 屋久島に、何度も来た。 来るたびに、島は違う顔を見せる。 雨の多いこの島の森で、霧を描く。 空気を描く。湿度を描く。 木漏れ日が葉をすり抜けるその一瞬を—— 日本画の絵具と刷毛で、画面に置いていく。 日本画には、やり直しがない。 だから一筆目を置く前に、 絵はすでに、頭の中で完成していなければならない。 Nihonga was nurtured through the long history of coexistence between humanity and nature. Washi, nikawa, mineral pigments —all are born of nature, and return to it.
