In today's video, I'll be sharing my day trip from Busan to Pohang in three parts.
After visiting Space Walk in the last segment, I’m heading to Guryongpo.
Guryongpo is a seaside town in Pohang, South Korea,
a place where ocean light and history blend into a cinematic landscape.
Along the coast lies the Guryongpo Japanese House Street, a district formed after 1883 where more than 40 traditional Japanese wooden houses still remain.
Old restaurants turned cafés, a historic elementary school, and vintage postal displays
preserve the traces of everyday life from a bygone era.
The town also served as a filming backdrop for the Korean drama
“When the Camellia Blooms,” adding a cinematic charm to its nostalgic streets.
From the hilltop Guryongpo Park, visitors can overlook the fishing village and the open sea, a view that feels like a quiet scene from a film.
At the center stands the Guryongpo Modern Culture & History Museum,
a restored 1920s Japanese residence built by Zenkichi Hashimoto, where living spaces such as the Buddhist altar, kotatsu, kitchen, and washroom have been faithfully recreated.
Guryongpo is a town where the past and present meet—a story written by the sea, the houses, and the wind.
Guryongpo Japanese Houses Street
A residential community had been formed by the Japanese over 100 years ago in Guryongpo, a region with rich aquatic resources, and they engaged in economic activities such as fishing and shipping businesses.
The houses from that era were restored and the Guryongpo Japanese House Street was formed in an attempt to preserve and remind ourselves of the history of the Japanese colonial period.
Guryongpo Modern History Museum
The Guryongpo Modern History Museum is a restored Japanese wooden residence built in the 1920s by Hashimoto Zenkichi.
Located within the Japanese House Street district, the museum faithfully recreates living spaces from the era—including the Buddhist altar, kotatsu, kitchen, and washroom.
Step inside and you’ll feel the quiet warmth of a home preserved in time.
Wood, light, and silence tell the story of everyday life in Guryongpo’s modern past, offering a rare glimpse into the cultural layers of this seaside town.
A place where history breathes—
this is the Guryongpo Modern History Museum.
