#appalachia #appalachianfolklore #appalachianmountains Up in these mountains, old tricks handed down by the old folks have kept people warm through the stretches when the cold hits hardest. I am going to show you nine of them in this video, and every one of them still works. Winter is hardest on the ones who live by themselves. When the stove burns low, the lights go out, or the steps turn to ice, there is nobody in the next room to call to. I'm Omer Crum. I am eighty years old, and I cut timber for forty years in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. Since my Edna passed in 2021, I have lived alone, and these are the same tricks I use every winter. By my back door there is a nail, and on that nail hangs the one thing I never step outside without when there is snow on the ground. Most of these tricks cost next to nothing. You will learn what a bag of rice and an old pair of overalls can do at the bottom of your door, and why the bubble wrap from your packages belongs on your windows instead of in the trash. You will find out what a coin sitting on a cup of ice in your freezer can tell you after a night with no power. And at the end, I will tell you what hangs on that nail, and why it might be the most important thing in this whole video. The old folks up here used to say, never let the first snow find your cupboard empty. You will understand why, too. Who checks on you in the winter, and who do you check on? Tell me in the comments, and tell me what county you are from. I read every one of them. If there is somebody in your life who lives alone, a parent or an old friend down the road, share this with them. And if you want more of these old mountain ways, subscribe and ring the bell. Check on your neighbors. Keep your people close. And remember, nobody up here gets through the winter alone. I'll see you back on the porch. #easternkentucky #survivaltips #lostskills #homesteading #oldways #holler #mountainlife #rurallife #cabinlife #winterprep #poweroutage #livingalone
