#appalachia #appalachianfolklore #appalachianmountains Long before the sun clears the ridge, up a holler in these Appalachian mountains, a kitchen light is already burning. While most of the country is still asleep, a family up here is starting a day that looks a lot like the days their grandparents lived. The wood stove, the milk cow, the garden, the woodpile. To some folks it might look like a hard way to live. To the people who live it, it is home. And this fall, the very season you are living right now, you are going to spend a whole day with them, right here in this video. I'm Omer Crum. I am eighty years old, and I cut timber for forty years in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. This is not my own family's story. It is one day with a family like so many others up these creeks, and I know it well enough to walk you through it, hour by hour. In this video, you will follow them from before dawn until the last light goes out for the night. You will see how the old folks up here still live a fall day with the customs and traditions they keep to this day, how an old mule still brings the logs down a hillside no tractor would dare to climb, and how Papaw, the grandfather, keeps the fire alive all night without it ever going out. You will find out how Mamaw, the grandmother, spends her hours looking after the house, the garden and the grandchildren, without ever forgetting the animals that matter so much in these valleys with a new winter on the way, and what Papaw hands down to his grandson while they sit quiet against a hickory tree at the edge of the woods. Up here, the work you do in the fall is what feeds you and keeps you warm in February. Every day up here is different, and today you are going to live one of them with this family. If you would like to spend more days like this one up the holler, subscribe and ring the bell. Now tell me, what does fall smell like where you live? Do you do any of the things these families do? Tell me in the comments, and tell me what county you are from. I read every one of them. Stay close to your people. Keep the porch light on. And remember, home is the place that knows your name. I'll see you back on the porch. #appalachiantrail #easternkentucky #homesteading #fall #autumn #countrylife #rurallife #simpleliving #dayinthelife #farmlife #kentucky #woodstove
