In the second session of the CLFC's Post-Concussion Community Learning Series, Brendan Hoffe, PhD, explores how Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) affects executive functioning and cognitive load — and offers practical strategies to help manage daily life during recovery.
This session breaks down why tasks that once felt effortless can become overwhelming for those recovering from a concussion or living with PCS, and introduces evidence-based tools such as Pacing and Planning and the Pomodoro Technique to help build cognitive capacity over time.
Topics discussed included:
What executive functioning is and why it's highly vulnerable to concussion
How PCS disrupts the brain's "command centre" and white matter communication
The science of cognitive load and why mental fatigue sets in faster after injury
The "Invisible Problem" of PCS
The 3 P's Strategy: Planning, Prioritizing, and Pacing
The Pomodoro Technique and how to adapt it for PCS recovery
