In 1910, the Korean Empire vanished — but its royal family did not. What happened to the House of Yi after Japan annexed Korea? This documentary traces the dynasty from Emperor Sunjong's ceremonial captivity at Changdeokgung, through the death of Gojong and the March First Movement it ignited, to the protests that erupted at Sunjong's own funeral.
We follow Crown Prince Yi Un — raised in Tokyo, married into Japan's imperial family, and made an officer of the army occupying his own country — and his half-sister Princess Deokhye, taken to Japan as a child and returned to Seoul only in 1962, thirty-eight years later. After liberation in 1945, the family came home not as monarchs but as citizens: Yi Bangja devoted herself to welfare work, while Yi Gu, the last prince, died in a Tokyo hotel in 2005.
A story of survival, symbolism, and a throne that never returned — told in six chapters with period-accurate black-and-white visuals and a single calm narration, this is the forgotten fate of Korea's last dynasty.
