The sermon emphasizes that the Christian’s ultimate accountability is not to human authorities or public opinion, but to the Holy Trinity who has saved us through Christ. Drawing from 1 Peter 4 vs. 1 through 6, the sermon considers the radical change brought about by the gospel. Having been freed from the dominion of sin, Christians are called to turn away from former sinful passions and live according to the will of God. Our transformed lives should bear witness to Christ even when unbelievers misunderstand, malign, or reject our conduct. The sermon then turns to verses 7–11 and considers what it means to be faithful stewards of God’s varied grace. Believers are called to be sober-minded, prayerful, loving, hospitable, and willing to serve one another without grumbling. Whatever gifts God has given—whether preaching, teaching, or serving—we are to exercise them faithfully and for the glory of God. Finally, verses 12–19 address accountability in suffering. Christians should not regard fiery trials as something strange, but are called to rejoice when they suffer for Christ’s sake. The sermon distinguishes suffering for faithfully following Christ from suffering as a consequence of sinful conduct, and reminds believers of the solemn truth that judgment begins with the house of God. Those who suffer according to God’s will are therefore called to entrust themselves to their faithful Creator while continuing to do good. The message ultimately calls every Christian to examine his or her life in light of God’s judgment and grace: we cannot continue living as we did before Christ saved us. We are accountable to our Creator in everything and are called to live in a way that brings glory to His name.
