For generations, Kuwait was deeply connected to the sea. Its location at the northern edge of the Arabian Gulf helped turn the town into a center of maritime trade, shipbuilding and pearling. Wooden dhows carried merchants across Gulf and Indian Ocean routes, while during the pearling season, crews left the shore in search of natural pearl oysters beneath the warm Gulf waters. Pearl diving was anything but romantic. Divers descended repeatedly with simple equipment, holding their breath as they searched the seabed, while sailors and crew members above worked together through long days at sea. Entire communities depended on the season, and the possibility of finding a valuable pearl came with exhaustion, danger and uncertainty. Music belonged to this maritime world too. Kuwait and the wider Gulf developed rich sea-song traditions connected to sailors, pearl divers and life aboard the dhow. Collective singing, handclaps and percussion helped create rhythm during work and brought crews together during the long periods away from home. Kuwait also became known for sawt, an urban Gulf musical tradition built around poetry, oud, mirwas and rhythmic interplay. Then the economic world changed. The pearl industry declined dramatically during the twentieth century, while the discovery and export of oil reshaped Kuwait on an extraordinary scale. Within a few generations, a society whose fortunes had long been tied to wooden ships and the sea entered the petroleum age. Pearls Before Oil looks back toward the Kuwait that came before that transformation — when the horizon was filled with dhow sails, wealth could hide inside an oyster, and the rhythm of the Gulf was inseparable from everyday life. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🦪 اللؤلؤ قبل النفط قبل أن يغيّر النفط وجه الكويت، كان هناك كنز آخر ارتبط بحياة أهلها واقتصادها: اللؤلؤ. عاشت الكويت لأجيال على علاقة وثيقة بالبحر. فقد ساعد موقعها في شمال الخليج العربي على جعلها مركزاً للتجارة البحرية وصناعة السفن والغوص على اللؤلؤ. وكانت السفن الخشبية تنقل التجار عبر الخليج وطرق المحيط الهندي، بينما يخرج البحّارة والغواصون خلال موسم الغوص بحثاً عن محار اللؤلؤ الطبيعي في مياه الخليج. لكن حياة الغوص لم تكن سهلة. كان الغواص ينزل إلى الأعماق مرات عديدة مستخدماً أدوات بسيطة، ويحبس أنفاسه أثناء البحث في قاع البحر، بينما يعمل بقية أفراد الطاقم فوقه لساعات طويلة. وكانت عائلات ومجتمعات كاملة تنتظر نتائج الموسم، في مهنة جمعت بين الأمل والتعب والخطر وعدم اليقين. وكان للموسيقى مكانها أيضاً في هذا العالم البحري. فقد عرفت الكويت والخليج تقاليد غنائية ارتبطت بالبحّارة والغواصين والحياة على متن السفن، حيث اجتمع الغناء الجماعي والتصفيق والإيقاعات ليصنعوا نبضاً يرافق العمل والأيام الطويلة في البحر. كما اشتهرت الكويت بفن الصوت، أحد أهم الفنون الموسيقية الحضرية في الخليج، والذي يجمع الشعر مع العود والمِرواس والإيقاع. ثم تغيّر كل شيء. تراجعت تجارة اللؤلؤ بشكل كبير خلال القرن العشرين، وفي الوقت نفسه بدأ النفط يعيد تشكيل اقتصاد الكويت ومدنها وحياتها اليومية بصورة غير مسبوقة. وخلال بضعة أجيال فقط، انتقلت البلاد من عالم ارتبطت فيه الثروة بالسفن والبحر إلى عصر النفط.
