Sirat Bani Hilal — the Epic of Banu Hilal — is one of the great oral traditions of the Arab world. Told and retold across generations, its enormous cycle of stories follows the Banu Hilal tribe and legendary figures such as Abu Zayd al-Hilali through journeys, rivalries, battles, alliances, love stories and the famous migration westward from Arabia toward North Africa. Behind the epic lies real history. Banu Hilal were Arab tribes whose migrations became particularly significant during the 11th century, when groups moved into Egypt and across North Africa. But over centuries of oral storytelling, historical memory grew into something much larger. Real events mixed with poetry, heroic exaggeration, local traditions and legendary characters until Banu Hilal became not simply a historical account, but an entire storytelling universe. What makes the tradition especially fascinating is the way it survived. In Egypt, professional poets preserved and performed the Hilali epic for audiences, traditionally accompanying their sung narration with the rababa. A single bowed string could carry an enormous story: heroes, deserts, journeys and generations of memory unfolding night after night. Different storytellers and communities developed their own versions, meaning there was never just one fixed text of the epic. The tradition became so culturally important that UNESCO recognized Al-Sirah Al-Hilaliyyah as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Banu Hilal is therefore more than a story about warriors crossing the desert. It is also a story about how Arabs remembered — how history could become poetry, poetry could become music, and music could carry a story across centuries. 00:00 Abu Zayd al-Hilali 02:30 Hilal Caravan 04:28 From Arabia to Ifriqiya 07:05 The Black Knight of Banu Hilal 09:36 Hilaliyyah Path 12:06 Hilali Road 13:54 A Thousand Verses 15:48 The Westward Road 18:36 The Great Migration 19:54 Banu Hilal ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎧 Let the music play.
