How much food can we gather before winter?
Autumn is a time of abundance here, when the vegetable garden, orchard, and sea all have something to offer.
As part of our ongoing journey towards self-sufficiency and more sustainable living, we wanted to see just how much food we could gather and preserve for the colder months ahead.
The answer is, a lot 😊
In this video, we are harvesting vegetables from our garden, gathering apples from the orchard, and bringing home fish from the sea.
We get together with friends and family to press close to 100 L of apple juice in a single weekend — many hands make light work and well worth it for the taste and the experience of making it together.
For us, growing and gathering our own food is about more than filling the pantry. It is about making the most of what the seasons offer, learning practical skills, and building a way of life where we rely a little less on the grocery store and a little more on the land around us.
We are still learning as we go, balancing family life with the work of growing, harvesting, and preserving food.
But every season teaches us something new, and this year has been a good reminder of how much food a small family can produce when the garden, orchard, and surrounding landscape all play their part.
If you are interested in sustainable living, self-sufficiency, growing your own food, foraging, food preservation, or simply showing your children where food comes from, we hope you'll enjoy joining us for of autumn’s abundance.
