The Greenland shark can live for around 400 years, longer than any other vertebrate on Earth. Scientists dated these sharks by measuring radioactive carbon in their eye lenses, and the oldest one was estimated at about 390 years old. The secret is a mix of near-freezing water that slows their metabolism, growth of just one centimeter a year, and a body that may not reach maturity until age 150. This video explains how evolution built a shark that trades speed for time, and why that strategy makes it so vulnerable today. How long do you think you could live if you moved this slowly? Tell us in the comments.
