What is the safest and most realistic way for hobbyist jiu jitsu practitioners to train takedowns? Many adults begin learning wrestling and takedowns without any previous experience from their youth. If takedown training is introduced without enough structure, it can quickly become dangerous—and students may never develop the individual skills required to become confident on their feet. In this video, we use the double-leg takedown to demonstrate how we structure wrestling and takedown training for hobbyists at KATA. We begin each class with 6–8 minutes of hand-fighting drills. This allows students to consistently develop their stance, positioning, grips, movement, and ability to create openings before attempting a takedown. From there, we isolate the mechanics of the takedown entry and finish. Once students understand the basic movement, we introduce the defender’s most likely reactions and teach students how to chain attacks together based on those responses. Learning the finishing mechanics is especially important. Students must understand how to complete the takedown with control while also learning how to fall and receive the takedown safely. Finally, the exchange does not end when the defender’s hips touch the floor. Students must immediately train the pinning battle that follows—establishing control, stabilizing top position, and preventing their partner from scrambling back to their feet. Our approach develops the complete takedown sequence: Hand fighting → Entry → Defensive reaction → Chained finish → Safe landing → Immediate pin For hobbyists, realistic takedown training should not begin with uncontrolled rounds from the feet. It should progressively develop every phase of the exchange so students can build confidence, skill, and safety through consistent practice.
