Poi, all'improvviso, si apre l'oceano.
Infine Lake McKenzie: sabbia bianchissima e acqua piovana dalle trasparenze ipnotiche.

AUSTRALIA 20 | FRASER ISLAND… ⚓ Gateway to Another World | Bike Vlog | ENG DUB
A rusting shipwreck, a smiling hooded figure, and an island where time seems to have stood still. What awaits us on the other side of the forest?
K’gari, Fraser Island. A world of sand, tropical rainforest, and wild dingoes. All it takes is turning onto a sandy track to find yourself in a completely different Australia.
But before reaching K’gari, there's still room for a little everyday camper chaos: switching on the camera inevitably leads to embarrassing moments, Lucia watches my culinary creations with barely concealed disgust, and a fantastic public swimming pool costing just €2.50 reminds us how affordable public facilities are in Australia.
This morning, the ferry takes us to K’gari. And everything changes. Dingoes welcome us to this densely forested, wild, almost uninhabited island. We venture along sandy tracks that disappear into thick, humid, impenetrable rainforest. Ancient trees, deep shadows, eerie silences. The ancient presence of the Butchulla Aboriginal culture seems to emerge from every corner. Here, nature isn't just a backdrop. It swallows us whole.
Our 4WD makes its way through the forest. Then, suddenly, the ocean opens up before us. Miles of fine sand, wind, and dingoes patrolling the shoreline, all the way to the skeleton of the SS Maheno. Built in 1905 and used as a hospital ship during World War I, the ocean liner was driven ashore by a cyclone in 1935. Ever since, salt and time have been slowly devouring it.
At Eli Creek, we let the current carry us along a freshwater stream bubbling up from the ground, as clear as glass. But the dingoes approach again, and we have to keep them at a safe distance. Finally, Lake McKenzie: dazzling white sand and rainwater so clear it's almost hypnotic. We plunge into the wild heart of the world's largest sand island.
When the ferry brings us back to the mainland, we're covered in sand and salt, with a feeling we know all too well. Once again, Australia has pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible to see. And every time we think we've seen the best it has to offer, it surprises us all over again.
That's why we just can't tear ourselves away.
