AUSTRALIA 16 | THE HUG 🍷 Some Distances Grow Shorter This Way | Bike Vlog | ENG DUB
Travelling by camper is wonderful, until the cramped spaces, the bikes that have to be loaded and unloaded, the kilometres and the trucks with their engines running all night start to add up. I sleep with earplugs, the three of us live together in just a few square metres, and it takes very little for something trivial to put that coexistence to the test.
But the road almost always manages to help us overcome the difficulties. At Australian truck stops, we sleep alongside truck drivers who cross the continent delivering goods to cities, farms, mines and remote places. Here, road transport is essential: rail carries enormous quantities of freight along the main routes, but trucks are the ones that truly reach everywhere. Perhaps that is why some truck stops are genuine service centres for people who spend their days on the road, equipped with showers, restaurants, shops and mechanical assistance, all organised with remarkable efficiency.
We pay tribute to them in our own way: by enjoying their food. First the tasty hot dogs, then the enormous Australian steaks, washed down with an excellent Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. And that is when the miracle happens: the tensions of the past few days melt away. Perhaps pointless arguments should be dealt with like this, with fewer arguments and a bottle of the good stuff.
In the end, Lucia and I hug. Nicola, wisely staying out of the line of fire, smiles and films the scene. No one has really won, and no one feels the need to be right anymore. What remains is the camper, the highway and that quiet peace that arrives when you realise that the problems that seemed insurmountable only a few hours earlier somehow find a solution.
Travelling together also means this: wearing each other down in the same confined spaces, clashing, knowing when to move apart for a while and then finding each other again. We know that one day we will remember the badly chosen words less, and much more that evening, that wine, that hug and the Australian sunset that, without asking for anything, wrapped itself around us and drew us closer.
