If tradition speaks of eighteen Upapurāṇas, why do sources such as the Kūrma Purāṇa, Padma Purāṇa, Devī Bhāgavata and Bṛhaddharma Purāṇa preserve different lists? That is the central mystery of Episode 2. In this episode of: “उपपुराण रहस्य | The Hidden Upapurāṇas of Sanatana Dharma” we compare different traditional catalogues of the eighteen Upapurāṇas and investigate why their membership varies. We explore: • Where does the traditional number eighteen come from? • What is the Kūrma Purāṇa list? • What does the Garuḍa Purāṇa preserve? • How does the Padma Purāṇa list differ? • What changes in the Devī Bhāgavata tradition? • Why is the Bṛhaddharma Purāṇa list so different? • Are these differences simply manuscript variations? • Could some names represent different textual traditions? • Why do names such as Skanda, Vāmana and Brahmāṇḍa appear in Upapurāṇa catalogues? • Why is the historical classification of Mahāpurāṇas and Upapurāṇas more complex than modern lists suggest? • Is there really one universally fixed canonical list of eighteen? We will examine Sanskrit textual evidence, traditional catalogues, variant names, textual traditions and modern scholarship. The purpose is not to force all traditions into one artificial list. The purpose is to understand what the sources actually say. The central conclusion of this episode is: “The traditional number is eighteen— but the membership of those eighteen is not identical across all sources.” And this leads to an even bigger question: If different traditions preserve different names, how large is the wider Upapurāṇa corpus?
