China's Type 055 is bigger than any Arleigh Burke destroyer ever built, carries 112 missile cells wide enough for an anti-ship ballistic missile, and costs roughly a third as much. The Arleigh Burke has 35 years of service and the combat record to prove it. So which matters more when the next war at sea starts? In this video, we break down the engineering behind both ships: why the Burke was built almost entirely from steel after the USS Belknap fire, how it survived the USS Cole bombing, and how USS Carney fought 51 combat engagements in the Red Sea. Then we look at the Type 055 (NATO: Renhai-class cruiser): its roughly 30 MW of generating capacity, its 850 mm launch cells sized for the YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile, and its dual-band radar tower. We also compare the shipyards behind them. Ten Type 055s are in service, with at least 16 expected. China's shipbuilding capacity is estimated at more than 200 times America's. The US Navy's Flight III destroyers average about $2.7 billion each, while DDG(X) isn't due until FY2032. Finally, we cover the honest limits on both sides: the Type 055's untested combat record, interceptor density, reload at sea, and the allied network that still gives the US Navy its edge. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Two Chinese warships, one American destroyer 01:34 Built to survive: steel, Kevlar and the Cold War threat 04:44 35 years of evolution and the Red Sea fight 07:45 Type 055: the cruiser China calls a destroyer 11:43 The shipyard race: 10 ships, 3-to-1 cost ratio 14:22 The honest limits on both sides 16:59 The stakes: Taiwan, allies and the 2040s 📌 Subscribe for more on China's industrial rise and the engineering behind it. 💬 Can industrial capacity outweigh combat experience?
